Dutt Teri ki.
Sanjay Dutt, a name every 80’s child heard. The ‘Rocky’ of the Indian film industry. If you think Salman Khan has a bad boy image, you are probably a millennial baby. Sanjay has admitted to it all, drugs, sex, violence, pranks, everything. So when the trailer of this nemesis son of the docile Sunil Dutt and Nargis’ Movie was released I thought Ranbir Kapoor was just mimicking his voice, Copied his style and even stole his mannerisms. I saw the movie ‘Sanju’ yesterday and realized that my judgement was not accurate. The movie isn’t about being like Sanjay Dutt but about being Sanjay Dutt. The story is truly only about him. His relationship with his parents, especially Sunil Dutt is the main USP of the movie. The story sheds light on what had always been assumed by the media even when they are proofs that don’t support their assumptions.
Sanju is a story of a nervous son stepping into the gigantic shoes of his celebrity parents. The burden of his impending stardom, his father’s expectations and the sudden news of his mother’s ill health throw him in the path of drugs and alcohol. People say a bad company makes peer pressure an easy target but this movie shows how yes when the only people you trust are your friends you do tend to listen to them and join them in the frolic. A 17-year-old boy, who had so much fear and respect for his father to not even smoke in front of him to become a raging drug addict and terrorist, is the story of Sanju.
Ranbir Kapoor May sound like Sanjay, dress like Sanjay and even act like Sanjay but you know the emotions are real. He is our window into Sanjay Dutt’s mind. There are times in the movie where you cannot disconnect from the actor playing the part from the actor whose story is being told. Was an innocent man charged for crimes which he wasn’t even an apparent part of is the suspense of the movie. It is this suspicion that ruins his life along with the life of his father. Sanjay knows when he is going to fall and immediately seeks help from his father. Throughout the movie, you see how his father has been his wall only to realize in the end how Sanjay was, in fact, his father’s wall. You can see the emotional sacrifices made by father and son, both Ranbir Kapoor and Paresh Rawal are so connected with their characters that the audience can feel their emotions. Since, the movie was supposed to be about Sanjay Dutt I’m glad the director didn’t include characters like his sisters, wife or school friends and just focused on his main lead. You cannot watch Sanju and not mention the amazing versatility shown by Vicky Kaushal. His role is pivotal not just in the movie but that character he played is the only friend Sanjay Dutt can trust. There were rumours about which actor is playing who in the movie like Jim Sabr was apparently salman Khan or Vicky kaushal kumar gaurav but just like the Movie says we shouldn’t just read the headlines to make our assumptions we need to read the whole story or in this case the Movie to understand the climax
Overall the script gets a 5/5
Ranbir Kapoor 4.5/5 ( certain scenes seem mimickeryish)
Vicky Kaushal 5/5
Paresh Rawal 4/ 5 (he acted well but I couldn’t connect him with Sunil Dutt)
